2024 Nissan Altima vs 2024 Subaru Legacy

While your average, budget-friendly sedan goes for around $20k in 2024, you can get your hands on something much more grand for just a little bit more. Both the Altima and Legacy offer rides at reasonable prices for what you get, but Nissan went the extra mile this year to gift you the opportunity of a lifetime. The 2024 Nissan Altima offers impeccable choices in powertrain paired with exceptional mileage and plenty of features that exceed today’s demand.

Performance

You can always count on Nissan to deliver amazing options that make you feel like you’ve made the right choice no matter what you pick. This proves true with the latest Altima which comes in two distinct engine types:

  • A standard 2.5L engine with up to 188 horsepower and 180 lb-ft of torque

  • An available 2.0L VC Turbo engine with up to 248 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque

All Altima models are built on an Xtronic CVT platform which is preferable to the average CVT system in most newer vehicles as it offers improved handling and performance. The level of care that’s been put into the new Altima contributes to its incredible fuel rating of 27 in-city and 39 highway miles per gallon.

Subaru also gives you the power of choice in the new Legacy, but it’s not as impressive as it sounds. The Legacy’s standard 2.5L engine only delivers up to 182 horsepower and is only capable of offering around 30 combined miles per gallon. The upgraded 2.5L Turbo engine can put out up to 260 horsepower, but you can bet that the mileage is substantially worse than the standard engine option. Plus, the Legacy comes in an ordinary CVT system which has been known to operate rather slowly. This can be frustrating when trying to stay on schedule and meet deadlines.

Safety Features

When you go with a brand-new Nissan, you know that you’ll be experiencing their latest tech including the famed ProPILOT Assist system. When paired with the standard Nissan Safety Shield 360 package, every drive will feel much safer with intuitive guidance and proactive alerts. Intelligent Around View Monitor and Intelligent Forward Collision Warning are also wonderful inclusions that came out well ahead of their time. While Nissan strives to make notable advances in their safety tech every year, Subaru continues to do the bare minimum by including not much more than the standard Subaru EyeSight package in the latest Legacy.

Interior

Hop into the 2024 Altima and you’ll be embraced by Nissan’s great taste in style. When you settle into the Zero Gravity seats and take in the matte and chrome accents and carbon fiber trim all around you, you might trick yourself into thinking that you’re in a genuine supercar! Everything is designed to keep you cozy during your drives, like heated seating, power adjustments, power lumbar support, and even a heated steering wheel. You can tell that convenience was placed high on the priority list in the Altima with the addition of voice recognition, wireless smartphone connectivity, and wifi hotspot support, all working together with the available 12.3-inch infotainment screen. Opt for the 9-speaker Bose audio system with Active Noise Cancellation for a fun drive without road noise distractions!

Again, Subaru did the bare minimum for the latest Legacy when it comes to the interior experience. The seats are bolstered which is nice, but there’s nothing else worth pointing out other than the nifty dual-zone climate control system and available 12-speaker Bose setup. Speaking of entertainment, we want to point out the gripes with the Legacy’s infotainment screen. The touchscreen inputs are followed by lags in response times, and this is concerning considering that most of the Legacy’s controls are only accessible through this screen. This can become a major distraction on the road, leading to much frustration when you’re just trying to navigate simple functions.

Bottom Line

The new Subaru Legacy may have a powerful upgraded engine option, but that’s about all we can say about it. The new 2024 Nissan Altima, on the other hand, offers amazing engine options as well as better handling, technology, and style.
