Nissan SafetyShield 360 Features

Most of the new vehicles on the market today offer an array of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). These technologies can monitor the driver, vehicle behavior, road conditions, and depending on the system, actively avoid a collision.
Nissan Safety Shield 360 is Nissan’s name for its driver safety and assistance system that comes standard on the Kicks, Leaf, Maxima, Rogue Sport, Sentra, and Titan. On Nissan’s other vehicles, elements come standard while others are optional.
Our team at Maus Nissan North Tampa gives Nissan’s Safety Shield 360 an in-depth look below:
What is Nissan Safety Shield 360?
Six components that make up Safety Shield 360: blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, lane departure warning, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection and auto emergency braking, automatic high beams, and rear automatic braking.
Here is more detail of what each of these systems does:
*_Blind-spot warning:_ * Detects if there is a vehicle in a driver’s blind spot and warns the driver with visual and audible alerts.
*_Rear cross-traffic warning:_ * This feature is useful when backing out of parking spaces and driveways and will alert the driver if a vehicle is approaching.
*_Lane departure warning:_ * Alerts the driver if he or she is drifting from their lane. Nissan often uses steering wheel vibration for this warning.
*_Forward collision warning with pedestrian detection and automatic braking:_ * This feature uses a forward-facing camera and radar to track people, cars, and other objects ahead on the road. First, it will warn the driver if a potential collision could occur. Second, if the driver does not act, it will automatically brake to prevent a collision.
*_Automatic high beams:_ * The headlights of a Nissan vehicle will switch back and forth between low and high beams depending on lighting and traffic conditions around you.
*_Rear automatic braking:_ * If a stationary object is detected when backing up, this feature will apply the brakes.
Nissan’s Innovative Approach to Safety
Nissan Safety Shield 360 includes some of the most useful safety and driver assistance technology while leaving potentially unwanted tech like adaptive cruise control on the optional list.
Aside from that, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) reports that there are benefits of having Safety Shield 360 in Nissan vehicles.
Their report includes statistics such as:
- The cross-traffic warning feature reduces collisions by 22%
- Rearview cameras and sensors reduce crashes by 42%
- Automatic rear braking reduces collisions while reversing by 78%
Note: These statistics are in comparison to vehicles without these safety features.
ProPilot Assist
While Nissan’s Safety Shield 360 protects you from all sides, there is another important component of Nissan’s safety features called ProPilot Assist.
Currently available on the Rogue, Rogue Sport, Leaf, and Altima, ProPilot Assist is a hands-on driver-assist system that combines Nissan’s Intelligent Cruise Control and Steering Assist technologies into one.
Essentially, ProPilot Assist reduces the effort of the driver by taking control of acceleration, steering, and braking while out on the highway.
