2023 Nissan Altima vs 2023 Kia K5

Are you in the market for a new car? The 2023 Nissan Altima and the 2023 Kia K5 are both appealing midsize sedans that offer a lot of perks. But if you’re trying to decide between them, there are clear reasons why the Nissan Altima is the better option.
In this guide, our team at Maus Nissan of North Tampa outlines why the 2023 Nissan Altima is superior so you can make an informed decision before you purchase. Let’s get to it!
Overview
The 2023 Nissan Altima is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year with a few simple refreshes and updated technology features.
The Kia K5 is a rookie in the mid-size sedan segment. It replaced the Optima in 2021 as a practical but still affordable sporty sedan.
Performance
The 2023 Altima comes equipped with a standard 188-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT).
There is also an optional turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that makes up to 248 horsepower when fueled with premium fuel. It is also paired with a CVT.
The Altima SR also has sport-tuned suspension and 19-inch wheels that make it extra exciting on twisty sections of the road.
Most Kia K5 models are powered by a 180-hp turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Though it has nice acceleration in town, it is less impressive at highway speeds.
Fuel Economy
Interior
Inside, the Altima’s cabin provides a simple dashboard with user-friendly knobs and buttons. Interior materials vary among trim levels. But the best part of the Altima’s cabin is its seats. Trust us, Nissan’s Zero Gravity seats are honestly some of the most comfortable seats a car can have. Plus, soft armrests make cruising and sitting in traffic even more tolerable.
The front seat also has a decent amount of storage, with deep door pockets and a useful tray at the front of the center console.
Looking toward the back, the Altima also has large comfortable back seats with ample legroom. And if you need to carry groceries, sports equipment, or luggage, you’ll be happy to know that you can fit six carry-on bags in the Altima’s trunk and 17 when the rear seats are folded. Nice!
The Kia K5 is well-appointed with attractive materials such as wood trim on the dashboard and doors as well as ambient interior lighting, a panoramic sunroof, and a wireless charging pad. Too bad these amenities don’t make the seats more comfortable! The driver’s seat feels a little too high even when set at its lowest point, and the seats just can’t compare to the comfort offered by Nissan’s Zero Gravity seats!
Moving to the back, the K5 also has generous legroom, and the trunk has plenty of space for luggage; seven carry-ons can fit back there.
Technology Features
The Altima comes standard with an 8.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities. The infotainment interface offers a customizable interface but few personalization options otherwise. The sound system comes with useful tactile knobs for volume and tuning which is nice.
When you upgrade to the Altima SL or SR you will get a 12.3-inch touchscreen with wireless phone charging, navigation, and a Wi-Fi hotspot.
The Kia K5 also comes standard with an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system. A larger 10.3-inch touchscreen is standard starting at the GT-Line. Both systems offer a volume knob as well as physical buttons on the steering wheel.
The smaller 8.0-inch display offers wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integrations, but the larger upgraded screen does not and will require a corded connection.
Safety Features
Every Altima comes with a host of standard safety features including:
- Forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking
- Blind-spot monitoring
- High beam assist
- Rear-cross traffic alert
- Lane departure warning with available lane-keeping assist
- Available adaptive cruise control
Further, Nissan also offers a semi-autonomous drive mode called ProPilot Assist.
Kia’s K5 also offers a variety of standard and optional driver-assistance technology. Key safety features include:
- Standard forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking
- Standard lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist
- An available blind-spot monitor and rear cross-traffic alert
As you can see, the Nissan Altima offers some safety features that are not available on the Kia K5, making it the better option.
Bottom Line
We know that there are many factors at play when choosing a vehicle, whether it is the price, how the exterior looks, the features, etc. The 2023 Nissan Altima is worth buying over the Kia K5 due to its Zero Gravity Seats, safety features, and fuel economy. The Altima has been a favorite for 30 years for a reason!
