What Will Be the Leaf’s Successor?

Though the Leaf garnered great success in 2010 when it was first introduced, it has had a hard time keeping up with the influx of EVs from the likes of Tesla, Genesis, GM, and more in recent years. This is why Nissan has announced they will not be designing a next-generation Leaf.

Instead, Nissan is designing a more modern EV as a replacement for the Leaf, designed with today’s buyers in mind. And no, it is not the Ariya, Nissan’s second mass-market EV, this compact EV was never planned to be the Leaf’s replacement.

What we know now is that Nissan may replace the Leaf with a coupe-like crossover SUV similar to the concept car aptly named “Chill-Out” that the automaker revealed in 2021. Though it had a sleek and modern design, the production version will likely look less futuristic.

What’s in a Name?

Nissan executives were split over carrying over the Leaf name to a new vehicle, but they found that today, the Leaf name does not make much of an impact on EV shoppers.

When Will The New EV Be Produced?

According to a report from Autocar, the successor to the Leaf will likely enter into production in 2026. This is in preparation for the automaker’s shift to the majority of its output being in the EV market.

Nissan plans to leverage the supply of EV vehicles by taking advantage of its upcoming battery factory in collaboration with Envision AESC.

The Gen 5 battery cells that will be supplied by this factory will enhance the new model’s energy density by 30% over what the current Leaf model offers.

Furthermore, the new EV will reportedly be based on Nissan’s CMF-EV platform from the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi partnership, which is also the platform on which the Ariya is based.

Bottom Line

From the sounds of it, Nissan is planning to go bigger with this new EV iteration, which is due in part to the popularity of larger electric SUV-style vehicles. Time will tell whether they introduce an electric SUV that will rival Tesla or other big names in the EV market, but whatever lies on the horizon, we can’t wait to see what they come up with next.
