2022 Frontier Is Truck of The Year Contender

Nissan has been a big player in the compact and midsize pickup market since the early 1970s, so it’s no surprise that when the Frontier hit the market it was a runaway success. Though the Frontier was left largely unchanged from 2005 to 2021, for 2022 it has been completely redesigned.
Our team at Maus Nissan North Tampa discusses what makes the 2022 Frontier a “truck of the year” contender.
Performance
Most midsize trucks don’t typically shine in testing on the track. That said, the all-new 2022 Frontier performs quite well when put to the test.
The truck comes with one drive-train option, but it is a potent one. Tucked under the Frontier’s hood is a 3.8-liter V6 engine that pumps out 310 horsepower and 281 lb.-ft of torque. The engine is also backed by an impressive nine-speed automatic transmission.
In acceleration testing, the Nissan Frontier can go from 0-60 miles per hour in 8.59 seconds and can slow its brakes from 60-0 mph in just 123.24 feet; the best in its class.
Interior and Exterior
The 2022 Nissan Frontier was long overdue for an interior update, thankfully Nissan took this seriously and gave it a complete redesign. Now, the Frontier has an enhanced interior that is the most upscale in its class.
Enhancements to the interior include thoughtful additions like:
- A wireless charging pad
- A massive 9-inch infotainment display
- An excellent 10-speaker Fender premium audio package
- Intuitive accessory operation
- Storage compartments
Now, looking at the exterior, the Frontier is still a true mid-size pickup, which is a great thing!
It is available in nine beautiful colors including:
- Glacier white
- Gun metallic
- Boulder gray pearl
- Baja storm pearl
- Red alert
- Cardinal red tri-coat
- Tactical green metallic
- Deep pearl blue
- Super black
On the Highway
When it comes to pavement driving, the Frontier’s powerful engine allows for an ultra-smooth ride, thanks to its nine-speed transmission. Handling also received high marks in testing due to the Frontier PRO-4X package’s use of Bilstein dampers.
The fuel economy is average for the segment, coming in at 24 on the highway and 18 in the city.
Off-Roading
The best part of the 2022 Frontier is the PRO-4X off-road package, an assemblage of hard parts and interior treatments for adventuring off the pavement.
First made available on the 2009 Frontier, today’s PRO-4X iteration offers a stout chassis, heavy-duty bushings, and Bilstein shocks. Other unique equipment includes an electronic locking rear differential and a switch to change between Tow and Haul modes.
Safety Features
The 2022 Frontier comes equipped with enhanced safety features including:
- Blindspot warning
- Automatic emergency braking
- Intelligent around view monitor
- Automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection
- Rear automatic braking
- Rear cross-traffic alert
- Lane departure warning
- High beam assist
- And more!
Bottom Line
Though essentially a 17-year-old truck design, the Frontier has been in a top spot in its class for decades. And there’s a good reason for this, as the Frontier does everything that a pickup should and does it with style and class.
Nissan’s 2022 Frontier has improved in every way, and with the upgraded Pro 4X model, you are sure to find exactly what you need for all your off-road adventures.
