When Will Nissan Electric Vehicles Qualify For An EV Tax Credit?

Currently, only one Nissan vehicle, the Leaf, qualifies for a partial EV tax credit. However, big regulatory changes were implemented with the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) that have made changes to Nissan’s future tax credit eligibility.

Tax Credit Eligibility

To qualify for the Inflation Reduction Act, EVs must:

• Fall within a specific price range
• Have final assembly in North America
• Source raw materials for batteries from a country that has a free-trade agreement with the United States

Though the Nissan Leaf is the only current Nissan vehicle to meet these requirements, it plans to secure eligibility for all of its EVs (current and future) by 2026.

2024 Leaf Update

New federal regulations regarding the EV tax credit began on January 1st, 2024, and several electric vehicles that previously qualified for the tax credit lost their eligibility or were downgraded to partial credits.

An update that came out on March 6th, 2024 noted that 2024 Leaf EVs manufactured in 2024 and sold on or after March 6th may have partial eligibility for the EV tax credit but the buyer must meet the purchase and income qualifications as outlined by the IRS.

New EVs on the Horizon

Nissan currently has two EVs in its lineup but they have big plans to offer six EVs by 2026, including a new variant of the Leaf, the Ariya, and four new models that will be manufactured in Canton, Mississippi. Nissan hopes that 40% of its sales will be electric by 2030.

All four of these new EVs will qualify for federal tax credits.

Can Nissan Do It?

While many other automakers are making great strides toward manufacturing EVs, it may be a little more difficult for Nissan to meet these goals in the next few years.

In 2023, Nissan sold 729,350 vehicles, but only 12,000 of those were electric vehicles. Raw material sourcing is one of the most daunting challenges, but it’s something that we believe Nissan will be able to do!
