What Is the Difference Between a Nissan AWD, 4WD, and a 2WD?
When it comes to Nissan vehicles, their lineup has several powertrains to choose from including all-wheel-drive (AWD), four-wheel-drive (4WD), and two-wheel-drive (2WD). But what’s the difference between them in terms of drivability and performance?
Our pros at Maus Nissan of North Tampa share our insights so you can find and purchase the best Nissan vehicle for you.
First, let’s discuss the main differences between these drive trains.
All-Wheel-Drive
AWD cars are equipped with a system called a center differential which is composed of gears that equally split the power from the transmission between both the front and rear wheels.
It is a popular choice among consumers for many reasons as it can adapt to changing road conditions, such as uneven pavement or rainy weather.
Nissan Intelligent AWD
This system is designed to transfer power between the front and rear wheels when it detects a change in road conditions. Wheel sensors also detect any traction loss, and transfer power to the wheels that require a little more oomph.
This is a recommended feature if you live in an area that gets heavy rain (hello, Florida!) or if you plan to take your Nissan on an off-road road trip.
Also, AWD isn’t just relegated to Nissan’s SUVs like the Murano or the Rogue. The Nissan GT-R sports car is also equipped with an AWD system. But this system is a little different in that it is an ATTESA E-TS AWD system, it distributes torque to the front and rear wheels with the help of two driveshafts. This system is also rear-wheel biased, but in an instant, the torque can be split between the front and rear wheels.
AWD is available on the following Nissan vehicles:
- Altima
- Rogue
- Murano
- GT-R
- Ariya
Now, let’s explore FWD.
Four-Wheel-Drive
While both AWD and 4WD use all four wheels to power your Nissan forward, four-wheel-drive, AKA 4X4s, are rugged off-road vehicles that are meant for off-road adventures and towing.
- 4WD refers to SUVs
- 4×4 refers to trucks and utility vehicles
Vehicles with four-wheel-drive send power to all four wheels, to assist when driving through tough terrain with low traction.
Like Nissan’s Intelligent AWD system, Nissan SUVs equipped with Intelligent 4WD, include an Auto mode, which monitors and adjusts the balance of power between all four wheels. Plus, they have selectable drive modes where drivers can seamlessly shift between 2WD and 4WD depending on the road conditions ahead.
The Frontier, Titan, and Titan XD, all use a traditional 4×4 drivetrain, allowing drivers to switch between three drive modes:
- 4H: Light off-roading
- 4LO: Adds traction in difficult road conditions
- 2WD: For efficient highway driving
4WD is available on the following Nissan vehicles:
- Pathfinder
- Armada
- Frontier
- Titan
- Titan XD
Now, it’s time to look at 2WD.
Two-Wheel-Drive
2WD drive is the most common drivetrain on the market. Available in front-wheel-drive (FWD) and rear-wheel-drive (RWD), it sends power to two wheels simultaneously.
- FWD is usually for cars and SUVs
- RWD is common for trucks and high-performance sports cars
Vehicles equipped with two-wheel drive are perfect for driving conditions that are dry and flat. They are also more affordable than AWD or 4WD vehicles.
Let’s break each 2WD drivetrain down:
FWD
Front-wheel-drive sends power to the front two wheels and offers better fuel efficiency. This style is common in cars and SUVs and is great for drivers who live in areas with mild weather.
Nissan vehicles with FWD include:
RWD
RWD vehicles are powered forward by the rear wheels. Many sports cars have RWD systems as they balance the weight between the front and rear of the car. In trucks, RWD helps improve towing capabilities and offers more traction when hauling heavy loads.
Nissan vehicles with RWD include:

Which Drivetrain is Right for You?
When deciding between AWD, 4WD, and 2WD, it comes down to your needs and preferences.
If you live in an area with wet or rough conditions or often take off-road trips, vehicles like the Rogue or Pathfinder which are equipped with AWD or 4WD may be best for you.
If you primarily commute on well-maintained roads, 2WD vehicles like the Altima or Sentra are perfect for efficient day-to-day driving.
